Dow Unveils New State-of-the-Art Film Application Development Center Capabilities
Texas Facility Designed to Enhance and Accelerate Product Innovation NPE 2009, Chicago - June 22, 2009 As part of ongoing efforts to encourage continued innovation in packaging material product development, The Dow Chemical Company (Dow) unveiled the new Dow Film Application Development Center featuring a Hosokawa Alpine American 7–layer coextrusion (“coex”) blown film line in Freeport, Texas. “We are happy to announce the availability of the new 7–layer film line at the Dow Film Application Development Center, which exemplifies the investments Dow has made to implement the tools necessary to drive product innovation and sustainability,” said Glenn Wright, commercial vice president for Dow’s North American Basic Plastics business. “Our belief is that this new equipment will inspire progress in plastic packaging material discovery and development.” As part of Dow’s mission to demonstrate distinctive development capabilities, the company installed the state-of-the-art Hosokawa Alpine American 7–layer coextrusion (“coex”) blown film line as the core component of the Center, complimenting Dow’s already impressive development and testing capabilities for blown and cast films and extrusion coating. The multi-million dollar investment will allow Dow and its customers to formulate structures for new or improved products through custom trials, testing and analysis. The 7–layer line is a full-scale, high performance, commercial quality film extrusion line designed to offer customers a convenient opportunity to test the performance of resins that may be under consideration for purchase, as well as develop new and improved film structures for packaging applications and more. “The new 7–layer film line is an excellent and necessary addition to our facility and marks a significant milestone for the entire packaging industry, as we’re now able to show customers how materials perform in real-time – under real-world conditions,” added John Hacskaylo, global research and development director for Dow’s Basic Plastics businesses. “Our on-site engineers, scientists and technologists will utilize this modern equipment to conduct material trials in cooperation with our customers and to create product prototypes, which will put Dow at the forefront of cooperative product development for plastic films.” The Center features include three multi- and two mono-layer blown film lines, two cast film lines, one extrusion coating line and a variety of associated fabricating and testing equipment. Polymer characterization laboratories, a sensory science laboratory featuring taste, odor and haptics testing capabilities, and pilot plants are also on site. Facilities within the Center can also offer testing and analysis of resin and film properties such as optical clarity, stiffness, sealability, heat resistance and more. “Our expanded developmental facilities will allow us to provide customers with same-day, sample quantities of commercial grade films suitable for printing, laminating and prototype packaging development – something that is relatively unheard of in the films industry,” Hacskaylo continued. The Dow Film Application Development Center is open, and the 7–layer line is fully operational for use.
