Dow Introduces Innovative Film Resins in Asia Pacific

New Products Deliver Better Optics, Improved Toughness and Faster Processing

Singapore - August 18, 2009

Dow Chemical (“Dow”) has today responded to the needs of film converters for new materials which offer better optics, improved toughness and faster processing opportunities with the launch of a range of innovative film resins for use in food and specialty packaging, industrial and consumer packaging, and health and hygiene applications. The new film resins have been developed leveraging Dow’s global technology expertise and leadership position in the global octene based polyethylene market.

The new products include developmental DOWLEXTM NG (Next Generation) Linear Low Density Polyethylene (LLDPE) Resins that take LLDPE performance to a new level and new ATTANETM NG (Next Generation) Ultra Low Density Polyethylene (ULDPE) Resins that allow the use of ULDPE in more demanding applications.

“The Asia Pacific region is an important long term strategic growth market for Dow. The launch of our new film resins here serves to reinforce our ongoing commitment to drive innovations and offer differentiated services that meet the needs of our Asia Pacific customers for next generation polyethylene solutions. Through leveraging our global technical capabilities, Dow looks to continuously enhance its products and services so that they provide value today and into the future”, said Sudjali Halim, Marketing Manager for Basic Plastics, Asia Pacific.

In first half of next year, a second Solution LLDPE plant will be commissioned in Thailand. This new plant is being jointly developed with The Siam Cement Group. With the commission of the plant, it will serve to further strengthen the comprehensive suite of product offerings that are already available to its customers in Asia Pacific.

DOWLEXTM NG LLDPE Resins
DOWLEXTM NG LLDPE Resins build on the performance credentials of DOWLEXTM Resins by offering greater differentiation opportunities for film converters through better optics and improved downgauging potential with good processability. These breakthroughs are enabled by Ziegler-Natta (Z-N) catalyst technology combined with the company’s proprietary solution process, which together have delivered ‘super octene’ LLDPE products. Two developmental resins based on this technology are now available: XUS 61530.02 LLDPE(1) (2) and XUS 61530.04 LLDPE(1) (2).

XUS 61530.02 LLDPE offers an excellent combination of dart, tear and puncture balance, as well as outstanding clarity and gloss for a 0.8 MI product.  Its excellent melt strength and bubble stability, along with its physical properties, make it suitable for applications such as heavy duty shipping sacks and down-gauged lamination films.  XUS 61530.04 LLDPE offers exceptional optics and high-processability without sacrificing physical properties. It has been specifically optimized to deliver clarity in pure component systems or in blends with LDPE, for use in high quality blown film applications where a combination of excellent optics, tear strength and sealability are required, such as high clarity lamination films, stretch hood skins requiring high stretch and optics, agricultural films, medium-performance sealant layers and specialty packaging.  Both developmental resins offer substantial downgauging potential, supporting the development of more sustainable packaging using less material. By offering improved protection of end-use products they also have the potential to reduce end-use product damage and waste.

ATTANETM NG Ultra Low Density Polyethylene (ULDPE) Resins
ATTANETM NG Ultra Low Density Polyethylene (ULDPE) Resins are designed with a molecular structure optimized to offer a combination of improved toughness (especially for cold temperature film applications), better optics, excellent flex crack resistance, low seal initiation temperature and enhanced processability. These performance properties make ATTANE NG ULDPE Resins well suited for demanding film applications targeted for use in abusive environments.

The first resins to be launched as part of the new product family are ATTANETM NG 4701G ULDPE and ATTANETM NG 4703G ULDPE.  Both grades offer an excellent balance of modulus, tear, puncture and bubble stability, achieved through Dow’s proprietary Solution Process.  More specifically, ATTANE NG 4701G ULDPE is a 0.912 density grade offering unparalleled ULDPE toughness and a 0.8 Melt Index. ATTANE NG 4703G ULDPE is a super tough 0.905 density grade with a 0.5 Melt Index, providing the added benefit of enhanced optics. It is also a good sealant resin by virtue of its low heat seal initiation temperature.  This resin, with its excellent impact modification, is well suited for use in heavy duty shipping sacks, as well as in general use cold temperature films, modified atmosphere packaging and individual quick frozen films.
